Nail Art-The Case Against!

Nail Art-The Case Against!

Halloween Nail Art

Halloween Nail Art

When I first started to write about nail art, which has taken, UAE and in fact the whole world by storm, I found myself at a loss for words. This fad which is making headlines in all beauty magazines, social media and celebrity fashion talks, has not had the same impact on me as it has on other women my age.

Even though, I love nail art on others and would not mind having some art on my nails occasionally, but I do question the wastage of time & money on this short lived happiness. For me, excessive nail art points to underlying psychological issues. Below I have outlined some of my reservations about this form of art:

  1. Attention Seeking Behavior

Girl- Nail ArtIt seems as if people indulging in extreme nail art are trying to seek attention as nail art is sure to draw comment form men and women alike. Likewise, it is an expression of social status as well since certain nail polishes are quite expensive and going to the nail bar especially for this is definitely an add-on which can cost anywhere starting from AED 50.

2.Personal Style and Social Status Statement

In extreme cases, and as being projected in magazines, the matching accessories that

go with the nail art include the dress, the jewelry, clutches and even shoes so the actual cost for nail art for an event would include all the above to achieve the perfect synchronized look. A salon in Dubai has announced the worlds most expensive manicure and it would cost around $ 50,000.

3.Hygiene and Maintenance of Nail Art:

The usual life of nail art is from 3 days to as long as it can last. My point is, if you have extreme nail art on your hands including piercings, studs, and extensions; how does one manage daily routine tasks for example typing, eating, washing etc

4.Nail Salon Hygiene:

Nail Art salons use the same equipment for many clients. There is a great risk of catching infections if you end up in a salon which does not have a proper hygiene regime in place.

Nail Art Fungal Infections:

Women getting frequent Nail Art have a risk of running fungal infection since the glue and other products used prevent nails from breathing. The fungal infection may make the nails turn green from the sides and brittle and thin out and can take as long as 6 months to heal. Apart from this, according to some doctors, even rubbing your eyes with Acrylic nails can lead to allergic reactions. The process involved during the nail art can lead to trauma of the nail structures.

Time & Cost:

Nail Art takes up a lot of time whether you have it done by professionals at spas or do it yourself at home. This addiction takes its worst form when women indulge in these activities at the office justifying it by lunch hour breaks etc. The cost as I mentioned earlier is that it starts from AED 50 and toughly you need one every week so it is AED 200 per month!

Despite all of the above, the nail product purchases increased by 25% in the year 2012

and have been following the same trend since then. Events like Nailympics in London encourage these trends, where nail artists from all over the world come to showcase their expertise. This industry is booming as can be seen from the innovation in form of nail accessories, 3-D nail art stickers, nail stamping kits and jewels being used, and in the ways it is being applied. Professional Education for nail art is also coming up. The latest trend is towards getting nail art for the pets! This makes me wonder what is next!
